Biography Narrative

Early Life and Background

Billy Minick was born on January 10, 1939, in Fort Worth, Texas. Raised in a family with ties to Fort Worth’s gambling culture of the mid-20th century, he developed an early interest in rodeo. Minick excelled in high school rodeo, winning the state All-Around Championship in 1958 through competitions in steer wrestling and bareback riding. A serious injury during the National High School Finals temporarily sidelined his career but led to a scholarship offer from McNeese State College, where he continued to compete in collegiate rodeo events.


Pam Minick grew up on a five-acre property in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her family had no prior involvement in horses, but after her mother purchased two quarter horses for her and her sister, Pam developed a lifelong passion for riding and competition. She joined 4-H and competed in speed and show events, eventually becoming active in the Nevada High School Rodeo Association. Pam found her greatest success in barrel racing and went on to win Miss Rodeo Nevada, followed shortly thereafter by Miss Rodeo America in 1973.


Professional Career and Rise

Billy Minick qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in bull riding in 1966 and later served as a medic in the U.S. Army, where he also competed in Alaskan rodeos. After returning to Texas, he produced rodeos across the country, purchasing the Harry Knight Rodeo Company in 1968 and managing major events in Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, and Cheyenne. His work expanded beyond competition to include stock contracting and booking entertainment, including nationally recognized performers.


In 1981, Minick began producing bull riding at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth. By 1989, he joined the ownership group of the venue and helped establish it as a central hub for Western entertainment and rodeo in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. His efforts also included founding the “Live at Billy Bob’s” record label and producing a series of live country music recordings.


Pam Minick’s career in rodeo continued after her Miss Rodeo America reign, including 5 decades working in broadcasting and promoting the rodeo industry. She has served as a commentator for the National Finals Rodeo, Professional Bull Riders, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, becoming the first woman to announce that event. She served as marketing director for Billy Bob’s Texas for 33 years.  She has hosted more than 1000 television programs including RFD-TV programs the award-winning beef cattle program “The American Rancher” and Gentle Giants, focusing on draft horses and equine education.


Legacy and Impact

Together, Billy and Pam Minick have been central figures in promoting rodeo, Western heritage, and country music in Texas. Their work at Billy Bob’s Texas combines live entertainment with rodeo competition, attracting over a million visitors annually. They have supported numerous charitable initiatives, including youth and equine programs, and continue to serve as role models in the rodeo and Western communities. Pam Minick’s broadcasting achievements have broken gender barriers in rodeo media, and Billy Minick’s production and entrepreneurial efforts have influenced rodeo organization nationwide.


Later Years

Billy and Pam Minick reside on a ranch near Argyle, Texas, where they continue to manage Billy Bob’s Texas. Billy participates in operations on a part-time basis, while Pam oversees marketing and media projects. Both remain active in promoting Western culture, team roping, equestrian activities, and local philanthropy.
