Early Life and Background

Tomas Garcilazo was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and was introduced at an early age to his family’s heritage in La Charrería, Mexico’s national sport. A third-generation Charro, he was raised within a tradition that emphasizes refined horsemanship, precision roping, discipline, and respect for horse and rider partnership.

La Charrería is a highly skilled equestrian discipline passed down through generations, and Garcilazo devoted himself from childhood to mastering its techniques. His training required sustained focus, patience, and daily practice, particularly in the artistry of maguey rope handling and advanced horsemanship maneuvers. These foundational experiences shaped his lifelong commitment to preserving and presenting the Charro tradition to audiences around the world.

Professional Career and Rise

Garcilazo began performing professionally in the United States in 1998, entering the rodeo world as a specialty act performer. That same year, he made his debut at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Over the course of more than two decades, he became a regular featured performer at the NFR, appearing 26 times and becoming widely recognized for his precision roping exhibitions and choreographed horsemanship displays.

His performances combine traditional Charro rope artistry with refined equestrian maneuvers executed in close coordination with his trained horses. These exhibitions highlight both technical mastery and cultural heritage, presenting La Charrería to audiences who may not otherwise encounter the discipline.

Beyond rodeo arenas, Garcilazo has performed internationally throughout Europe, Canada, Brazil, the United States, and Mexico. He appeared on Broadway in New York City and toured the United States with The Will Rogers Follies, a Tony Award–winning musical production. He was also a featured performer for two years at Disney’s Wild West Show in Paris, France, and toured Holland and Germany with the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.

Garcilazo has performed for presidents of Mexico and has appeared at the White House and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In recent years, he has toured nationally with the Aguilar family’s Jaripeo Sin Fronteras production, further expanding the reach of traditional Mexican equestrian performance within contemporary Western entertainment.

In addition to live performance, Garcilazo gained national television recognition as the winner of Season 1 of the TBS talent competition Go Big Show in 2021.

Legacy and Impact

Tomas Garcilazo’s career bridges traditional Mexican equestrian culture and modern rodeo entertainment. As a Charro performing consistently within Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association venues, he has introduced audiences across North America and internationally to the history and artistry of La Charrería.

His repeated recognition as PRCA Specialty Act of the Year reflects both professional excellence and sustained audience impact. He has been honored with “La Espuela de Oro” (The Golden Spur), one of the highest distinctions awarded by Mexican and U.S. Charrería associations, recognizing his career achievements and service as an ambassador of the sport.

By presenting culturally authentic performances within major Western venues, Garcilazo has strengthened cross-cultural appreciation within the broader Western heritage community. His work supports the preservation of La Charrería while demonstrating its place within contemporary rodeo production.

Later Years and Life

Garcilazo became a United States citizen in 2013 and resides in Stephenville, Texas. He continues to perform at rodeos, stock shows, horse expos, and equine events throughout the United States and internationally. His ongoing work reflects a continued commitment to horsemanship, performance excellence, and the preservation of Charro tradition for future generations.
