Early Life and Background

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo traces its origins to the livestock expositions held in San Antonio during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As South Texas agriculture expanded, civic leaders recognized the need for a permanent facility capable of hosting large-scale livestock events.

In the early 1940s, community leader Joe Freeman began organizing support for the construction of a multi-purpose coliseum to serve youth and the livestock industry. Freeman’s vision centered on creating a venue where agricultural education and youth competition could flourish. After years of fundraising and volunteer mobilization, construction of the Joe and Harry Freeman Coliseum began in January 1948.

The first San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo was held in February 1950 at the Freeman Coliseum. From its inception, the event operated under the guiding mission of emphasizing agriculture and education to develop the youth of Texas.

Professional Career and Rise

Operated by the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. (S.A.L.E.), the organization grew steadily in size and national prominence. What began as a regional livestock show evolved into one of the largest annual events in San Antonio and the State of Texas.

In 2003, the rodeo moved from the Freeman Coliseum to the AT&T Center, providing a modern venue capable of accommodating expanded attendance and production demands. The rodeo utilizes a tournament-style competition format consisting of 19 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) performances. Contestants compete within bracket rounds, with top money earners advancing to semifinals and finals. With a total payout exceeding $1.6 million, the event ranks among the highest-paying regular-season indoor rodeos in the United States. In 2007, it became ProRodeo’s first $1 million regular-season indoor rodeo.

Attendance has grown to approximately 1.3 to 1.5 million visitors annually. The event includes extensive retail vendors, food concessions, carnival attractions, and agricultural education exhibits, making it a comprehensive livestock exposition and entertainment event.

The organization’s success is attributed to thousands of volunteers who contribute service hours annually. Over time, S.A.L.E. has committed substantial financial resources to education through scholarships, grants, endowments, junior livestock auctions, calf scramble programs, and show premiums. Since inception, the organization has awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in educational funding and has supported tens of thousands of Texas youth participants.

Legacy and Impact

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo stands as one of Texas’ most significant agricultural and educational institutions. Its sustained volunteer leadership model has allowed the event to remain mission-focused while expanding in scale and financial impact.

More than 12,500 Texas college students have received scholarships through the organization, with approximately 1,500 active scholars attending Texas colleges and universities in recent years. Annual programs impact thousands of youth exhibitors and students across the state.

The rodeo’s professional reputation has been recognized repeatedly by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. It has received the PRCA Rodeo Committee of the Year Award multiple times and earned the Remuda Award for excellence in livestock.

By combining professional rodeo competition, agricultural education, and substantial scholarship funding, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has become a cornerstone institution supporting youth development and the agricultural industry in Texas.

Governed by San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc., the organization remains volunteer-driven and maintains its founding mission of supporting agriculture and youth education.
