Hay Cart

ca. 1910

Hay carts like this one had slatted, removable sides along all four sides. Because of the large weight it carried, it was pulled by two horses, one in front of the other. This cart had a unique pair of stands attached to the shafts to allow it to stand on its own without any draft animals harnessed to it. The wheels on these vehicles were also made extra large to avoid sinking in the mud.

Hay carts were widely used by small farmers all over America. On some of the larger plantations and farms in the South, however, long hay wagons of many different looks and models were used to carry huge amounts.

This cart was acquired about 1987 at an auction held in Dallas, Texas which was handled by the Martin Sale Auction. Mr. Sterquell painted it and added new chains.
