"The Cooper Grocery Co., Inc."
ca. 1910
Freight Wagons have been in use throughout the entire history of the United States. They were often very sturdy and large enough to haul all sorts of freight both to market and on the frontier farms.
Oddly enough, these freight wagons were given many amenities, including spring seats and hand brakes. These wagons could be used for a wide range of tasks and were often seen in the sity, country and on the open trail. As a result, the types and looks were extremely vaired. Sometimes, pioneers finishing the Oregon Trail or any emigration trip would convert their covered wagons for use as freight wagons.
The Hickman Collection includes two (2) freight wagons. The Cooper Grocery Wagon was originally a normal freight wagon, which required a complete restoration. It was acquired in 1989 at Willy Reynolds Ranch near Waco, TX.
